Supplicating to other than Allah, such as prophets and righteous people, for protection from evil one fears
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q3: A Muslim testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and says, when he sees something falling and wishes that this thing will not cause him harm when it lands, “O Messenger of Allah,” or “O Shaykh” Ahmad al-Tijani . Is this phrase considered shirk (associating partners with Allah)? Or are these phrases harmless to their speaker, and is it obligatory for the
Muslim to utter them, and is he not considered among the mushrikin (those who associate partners with Allah), and his deeds not invalidated? We ask you to issue a written fatwa (scholarly legal ruling) with evidence from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah (the Prophet's way) of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
A3: Allah the Exalted alone is the Preserver, the All-Knowing. So, if one wishes not to be harmed by a falling object, or fears that a calamity will befall him or any of his close ones or relatives in any circumstance, let him turn to Allah, in Whose hand is the dominion of all things, Who knows the secret and what is even more hidden. He should raise his need to Him and supplicate to Him with humility and in secret, so that He may protect him from calamity when he falls, in his sleep and wakefulness, and in all his circumstances, and remove from him evil and all the distress and hardship that befalls him. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:186] And He said: [Al-A'raf 7:55] And He said: [Ghafir 40:60] And if Shaytan leads someone astray, turning him away from supplicating to Allah to supplicating to other than Him, such as prophets, other righteous people, or jinn and devils, for protection from evil he fears for himself or for
his close ones and relatives, he has associated another god with Allah, hoping for His benefit and fearing His wrath, and relying on Him to fulfill his desires and needs. His refuge is Hellfire, and what an evil destination it is. Moreover, they are unable to ward off any harm from him, fulfill any of his needs, or achieve any of his goals. Allah the Exalted said:[Saba 34:22-23] And He, the Exalted, said: [Al-Isra 17:56] And He, the Mighty and Majestic, said: [An-Naml 27:62] And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَhis close ones and relatives, he has associated another god with Allah, hoping for His benefit and fearing His wrath, and relying on Him to fulfill his desires and needs. (22) Say, [O Muhammad], "Invoke those you claim [as deities] besides Allah." They do not possess an atom's weight [of ability] in the heavens or on the earth, and they do not have therein any partnership [with Him], nor is there for Him from among them any assistant. (23) And intercession does not benefit with Him except for one whom He permits. [And those wait] until, when terror is removed from their hearts, they will say [to one another], "What has your Lord said?" They will say, "The truth." And He is the Most High, the Grand.
Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]."
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember.
