Q: Among some of the Yemeni tribes, there is a belief that when a woman reaches an advanced age, if she looks at a young man or woman, or a boy, whether male or female, she can seize his soul, and if she wills, she can bring him back to life. Is there any basis for this belief in the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), or from any of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah? We inform you that the woman accused of this is taken out of her home by her son or the one who supports her and is thrown into the scorching sun. We also inform you that they have a man to whom they bring these elderly women, and he rules on whomever he wishes to be innocent and rules on whomever he wishes to be taking souls. We ask you to kindly answer our question, and may Allah reward you with good.
A: We do not know of any basis in the pure Shari'ah for the actions of the woman and the man mentioned
in the pure Shari'ah, and it is not permissible to believe in its occurrence at all; because death and life are in the hands of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and no one knows the unseen except Him; as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:[An-Naml 27:65] And if any of this occurs, it is a type of sorcery that creates illusions in the eye of a person, causing him to see shapes and bodies as other than they are in reality. It is forbidden by the consensus of the Muslims, and it is not permissible to affirm it; rather, it must be denied and warned against; because it is one of the major acts of disbelief and it is the sorcery of the sorcerers of Pharaoh. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
