The Treatment of Whispers and Satan’s Tricks

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

Fatwa No. ( 6506 ):

Q: I am a young Muslim who has just begun to commit myself to the religion. I face many consequences from Satan; whenever I manage to overcome one, he brings me another. After I had reached a good stage of commitment, and I saw, with the praise and grace of Allah, that I was slightly better than those around me, I began to see the people I used to consider less committed than me as now being better than me and ahead of me in obedience to Allah. When I look at myself, I find myself in a severe decline, far from the commitment I used to have. I resist myself and Satan in every way, but I find no one who feels what is tearing my chest and heart from within, or to whom I can confide the falsehoods that Satan places in my chest. This whispering does not leave me for a single moment, in every movement, in every stillness; in the mosque, in the street, in the home, and in the school. Is there anyone who will stand by my side against this Satan? Is there anyone whom Allah will assign to help me?
A: We advise you to abandon the whispers, turn away from them, and increase in
reciting the Qur'an, performing righteous deeds, seeking refuge in Allah, supplicating to Him, and calling upon Him (Glorified and Exalted is He) to ward off Satan’s schemes from you, to keep you firm upon the truth, and to guide your steps. Indeed, He (Glorified and Exalted is He) holds the reins of the servants, both jinn and humans, in His hand, and He directs them as He wills. Beware of being pleased with your worship, being deluded by your good behavior, and the abundance of your righteous deeds. Do not look to those who are below you in worship and the affairs of the Hereafter, for that is a path to delusion, a decrease in righteous deeds, and sluggishness in them, and it is Satan playing with the Muslim and discouraging him from good. Rather, look to those who are above you in holding fast to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and in clinging to them and being eager for them. For that is more likely to lead to an increase in righteous deeds, hastening to the forgiveness and mercy of Allah, and rising to the highest ranks and the abiding bliss. May Allah keep you firm upon the truth, guide you to the straight path, and remove the whispers from you. We also advise you to read the book [Tala'is Iblis] (The Deception of Iblis) by Abu al-Faraj ibn al-Jawzi , for he dealt with the subject in writing, and we hope that Allah will benefit you by reading it. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
