The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : It is well known that during the vacation, marriage occasions and wedding feasts and the like are numerous. Is it permissible for a person to attend a wedding feast or a marriage in which there is what is wrong, such as drumming or singing and the like?
The Shaykh : Yes. This question is pertinent, because people generally get married during this vacation. The original ruling for wedding feasts is that they are prescribed. The groom should hold a wedding feast, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf:. However, the wedding feast should be moderate, meaning: to a specific extent such that it does not reach extravagance, arrogance, and excess in food, as well as excess in venues. It has reached us that some people rent an entire hotel for this night for one hundred thousand or similar. This is arrogance. And this is what causes a decrease in marriages, because the groom is not prepared to spend these amounts. And when will he get these amounts? If people were to limit themselves to a modest wedding feast attended by the groom's relatives, the bride's relatives, and the nearest neighbors, that would be the good, as was the custom in the past. As for if the wedding feast includes what is forbidden, we say: If a person has an opinion and has standing, and by his presence he can stop the forbidden matter, then attendance is obligatory upon him. He must attend, because by his presence he gains two benefits:
The first benefit: answering the invitation. And the second benefit: removing what is wrong. And as for if he is unable, then he does not attend, because if he attends and participates with them, or sits but does not stand up and leave, he becomes like them in sin, may Allah protect us from that. And among what is wrong: what has reached us about some women that they come out in the street wearing the abaya. But when they enter, they throw off the abaya and become as if they are naked, may Allah protect us from that. This is what is wrong. And among what is wrong: that some women attend with cameras and photograph the scene.
