You mentioned that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) performed the second adhan from the perspective of unrestricted public interest.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner: If you would please, Shaykh, bear with me and be generous with me, because I am going to repeat a point in a question I raised before you in Makkah, which was about the action of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the first adhan on Friday, and you answered, and praise be to Allah, it was largely satisfactory, but one issue remains for me, which is: if the matter is as you stated, that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did that from the perspective of the necessary unrestricted public interest at that time as a result of the expansion that occurred.

The Shaykh : Yes, exactly.

The questioner: Is it not possible that this could be done without there being an adhan in this existing form, such as alerting or ordering the people and encouraging them to go to the Friday prayer, without there being an adhan in this known form?

The Shaykh: Of course, it is possible, but what is said about this is said about that, so what is the issue? The answer: It is possible.

The questioner: Yes, the issue is why Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) made it an adhan like this, because this will open, or will open, a door for the innovators in their argumentation using this action?

The Shaykh: The answer to this is known to us if that is the issue, the answer is known, but you, may Allah bless you, seem to want to distinguish between the Uthmanic adhan and the alternative you are asking about, whether it is possible or not, so we answered that it is possible, but was that also not opening a door for the innovators? What is the difference between this and that?

The questioner: That this is from the perspective of enjoining good and forbidding evil.

The Shaykh: Glory be to Allah! And that is also the case, and with prescribed words that include the exaltation of Allah and His oneness and testimony to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the message.

The questioner: Was there anything that called for reciting this adhan in its entirety?

The Shaykh : Yes?

The questioner: Was there anything that called for reciting this adhan in its entirety?

The Shaykh: It called for realizing the public interest that we referred to.

The questioner: As long as the public interest is realized with the least possible, this means that in reality, the point of issue in my mind still remains.

The Shaykh: I hope this issue will fall from your mind, because the result will be that Uthman ibn 'Affan innovated.

The questioner: May he be far from that, if Allah wills.

The Shaykh : That is it.

The questioner: But what we are seeking is a sound explanation for such an action by Uthman.

The Shaykh: The explanation is that he found the public interest due to—this is stated explicitly in Sahih al-Bukhari—the expansion of the buildings in Madinah and the fact that the voice of the mu'adhdhin in the Prophet's Mosque did not reach that place where the merchants used to gather on Friday, known as al-Zurra', so he saw it as a public interest to inform the people through the religious means of notification, which is the adhan, that the time had entered so they would leave their trade, as is the text of the Noble Qur'an. As for the humming, why he chose this wording over the wording of prayer does not lead to anything significant, because the addition occurred whether it was with the words Uthman chose or with a wording some people might invent; the addition existed, and this addition is originally not prescribed. But since the purpose of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was to realize a religious public interest necessitated by the circumstances of his time, he saw that, and it is sufficient that he was approved of this by the Companions without objection, and that was a Sunnah in the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. As for why he did not adopt another means, I believe that is a matter of cultural education that has no benefit.
