Benefits Derived from the Hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : What do we benefit from in this hadith? We benefit from three things. The first is that we should adopt the character of the Messenger (peace be upon him) in terms of generosity and nobility. If that is one's natural disposition, let him praise Allah (Mighty and Majestic). If it is not, let him strive against his own self, for Allah (the Exalted) says:
And present in [human] souls is stinginess وَأُحْضِرَتِ الْأَنْفُسُ الشُّحَّ
[An-Nisa 4:128]
This means that people's souls are inclined toward stinginess, and it is obligatory for each of us to strive against his self, to discipline it, and to accustom it to the noble traits of character, including generosity with good and being lenient with it. The second thing we benefit from is that we should be glad of our presence in blessed times, such as Ramadan. It is not acceptable for Ramadan to enter and then leave us as we were before it, meaning we remain as we were before Ramadan and after Ramadan, without responding to the spiritual life that the atmosphere of Ramadan revives, as it is the atmosphere of a preferred and honored month. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), as you have heard, was the most generous of people, yet the difference in his generosity was apparent in Ramadan due to this atmosphere, this noble and righteous time. This is the second benefit we derive from this hadith. The third and final benefit that comes to mind now is that a person benefits through being affected.
