Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : From Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
A man visited a brother of his in a village, so Allah put an angel in wait for him on the road. He asked, 'Where are you going?' He replied, 'To a brother of mine in this village.' He said, 'Is he responsible for some blessing you have?' He said, 'No, I love him for Allah.' He said, 'I am a messenger of Allah to you. Allah loves you as you love him.' زَارَ رجلٌ أخاً له في قرية ، فأرسل الله له ملكاً على مدرجته ، فقال : أين تريد ؟ قال : أخاً لي في هذه القرية ، فقال : هل له عليك مِن نعمة تربُّها ؟ قال : لا ، إني أُحبه في الله ، قال : فإني رسول الله إليك أنَّ الله أحبك كما أحببته
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 350
:
He (peace be upon him) said:
A man visited a brother of his in a village زارَ رجلٌ أخًا له في قرية
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 350
Here, "visited" means "intended to visit," and this is a style in the Arabic language; "visited" means "intended to visit." On this meaning, many verses and legal texts are interpreted, the most famous of which in the Qur'an is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
So when you recite the Qur'an, [first] seek refuge in Allah فإذا قرأت القرآن فاستعذ بالله
[An-Nahl 16:98]
The meaning is: if you intend to read, not if you have read and finished. Likewise here:
A man visited زار رجل
meaning: he intended to visit.
And among that is the hadith in al-Bukhari where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah that his father said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When any one of you enters Al-Khala' (the toilet), let him not touch his penis with his right hand.'" إذا دخل أحدكم الخلاء فليستعذ بالله
Sunan an-Nasa'i 25Sahih (Darussalam)
"If he enters" means: if he intends to enter, and this is very common.
Likewise here,
A man visited a brother of his زار رجل أخًا له
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 350
meaning he intended and began visiting a man who had a brother of his.
in a village, so Allah put an angel in wait for him on the road في قرية ، فأرصد الله له ملكًا على مدرجته
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 350
meaning: He sent a specific angel to watch for the arrival of this man on his path, meaning: on his road.
until he met him and said to him: Where are you going? He said: To a brother of mine in this village. The angel said to him: Does he have a blessing upon you that you are nurturing? حتى لقيه فقال له : أين تريد ؟ قال : أخًا لي في هذه القرية ، فقال له الملك : هل له عليك من نعمة تربُّها
: This means perhaps it is a man you visit because he has a favor of a blessing upon you that you benefit from, and you are nurturing it, meaning: you are raising it, preserving it, feeding it, and growing it. So because you know the favor of this man, you seek in your visit only for the sake of courtesy. He said: No, the matter is not as you think. I do not visit this man in this village ahead of me because he has a material, worldly favor upon me, but I visit him because I love him for the sake of Allah.
I am a meesenger to you from, Allah قال الملك : فإني رسول الله إليك
Sahih Muslim 2567a
meaning: Indeed, Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, sent me specifically to you to congratulate you because you intended to visit this man out of love for Allah, that Allah loves you as you loved this man whom you are about to visit.
So in this hadith is the great virtue for a person who leaves his home to visit a brother of his in Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He.
