Reading from the author's text with commentary and collation of manuscripts: "And Qadi 'Iyad said: Malik disliked it to be said

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may prayers and peace be upon the noblest of the prophets and messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what follows: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in *Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim*: "And Qadi 'Iyad said: Malik disliked it to be said: We visited the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It was reported from some of them that he attributed this to the curse of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) upon those who visit graves. He said: This is refuted by his statement:
I forbade you to visit graves, but you may now visit them
Sunan Abi Dawud 3235Sahih (Al-Albani)
. It was reported from some of them that the visitor is better than the one visited. He said: This is refuted by what came regarding the people of Paradise visiting their Lord"

The Shaykh : Allahu Akbar, meaning that some of them said: Do not say 'I visited the grave,' because the visitor is more noble than the one visited, which implies that if you say 'I visited the grave of the Prophet,' you are more noble than him. He refuted this with this strange refutation. Yes.
The reader: "He said: The better thing to say in this matter is that Malik disliked it because of adding the visit to the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that if he had said: We visited the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would not have disliked it, due to his statement:
O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. The anger on those who took the graves of their Prophets as places of prostration was terrible.
Muwatta Malik 9:93
So he prohibited adding this phrase to the grave and imitating those people, in order to block the means and cut off the door.
I said: It has become prevalent in the custom of many people to use the phrase 'We visited' in visiting the graves of the prophets and the righteous, rather than using the phrase 'visiting graves' in the innovative, shirk-based visit, not in the lawful visit. And no single hadith has been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding visiting a specific grave, and no one has narrated anything in this matter, neither the people of the authentic collections nor the Sunan, nor the imams who compiled Musnads like Imam Ahmad and others. Rather, it was narrated by those who collected fabricated hadiths and others. The most significant hadith narrated in this matter is what al-Daraqutni narrated, and it is weak by the consensus of the scholars of hadith. The hadiths narrated regarding visiting his grave, such as his saying:
Whoever visits me and my father Ibrahim al-Khalil in one year, I guarantee for him Paradise from Allah
, and
Whoever visits me after my death is as if he visited me in my life
, and
Whoever performs Hajj and does not visit me has wronged meمن حج ولم يزرني فقد جفاني
, and similar to these hadiths, are all false and fabricated.
But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted visiting graves in general, after he had forbidden it, as it is established from him in the authentic collections that he said:
I used to forbid you to visit graves, but (now) visit them.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5652Sahih (Darussalam)
. And in the authentic collections from him that he said:
I asked my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for my mother, but He did not permit it, and I asked Him for permission to visit her grave, so He permitted it. So visit the graves, for they remind you of the Hereafter
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:1425
.
This is a visit for the sake of remembering the Hereafter, and for this reason, it is permissible to visit the grave of a disbeliever for that purpose. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go out to al-Baqi' and greet the dead Muslims and make du'a for them, so this is a visit specific to Muslims"

The Shaykh : And in His (Blessed and Exalted is He) preventing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from seeking forgiveness for his mother is proof that it is not permissible for a person to ask for what is not possible in the Shari'ah, because this is transgression in du'a. If one asked Allah to make him a prophet, we would say: This is forbidden, this is not permissible.
And it appears that similarly, if one asked Allah the Exalted to grant him the stations of the prophets in Paradise, then this is transgression in du'a, because the stations of the prophets are specific to them. As for the hadith:
The dwellers of Jannah will look at those in the upper abodes above them as you look at a shining star which remains in the eastern or western horizon; such will be the difference in superiority which some of them have over others." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked: "Will those be the dwellings of the Prophets which no one else will be able to reach?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Yes, but by Him in Whose Hand my soul is! men who believed in Allah and acknowledged the truthfulness of the Messengers will reach them." إن أهل الجنة ليتراءون أهل الغرف كالكوكب الدري الغابر في الأفق. قالوا: يا رسول الله، تلك منازل الأنبياء لا ينالها غيرهم؟ أو قالوا الشهداء ؟ قال: بلى والذي نفسي بيده رجال آمنوا بالله وصدقوا المرسلين
Riyad as-Salihin 1887
meaning they attain these rooms, this does not indicate that the stations of non-prophets will be in the stations of the prophets.
So the rule is that whoever asks Allah for what is not possible in the Shari'ah is transgressing in du'a.
And among this is that Allah the Exalted does not respond to one who asks for sin or severing of family ties, because Allah does not approve of it.
And similarly, if one asks for what is not possible by divine decree, such as saying: O Allah, establish the Hour now, then this is not possible by divine decree according to the information of Allah, not according to the power of Allah. Allah is able for the Hour to occur now, but the Hour has signs that precede it according to the information of Allah and His Messenger.
So in any case, the rule is this: It is not permissible for a person to ask for what is not possible in the Shari'ah or by divine decree. Yes.
