The Shaykh :
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and my friends would play with me. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered, they would hide from him and he would call them to join me and they would play with me.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 368
Lady Aisha said, "I used to play with dolls." What is meant here by "dolls" is children's toys, which are called dolls and are made in the shape of girls; hence they are called "dolls" figuratively. Lady Aisha says that she used to play with dolls in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning in the house of the Prophet, and she was his wife, for she had married him (peace and blessings be upon him) when she was nine years old. Therefore, she was young in age, and it was fitting for her to play with her dolls while being the wife of the Master of Mankind (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him), who appreciates people's situations in their true worth and knows the rights of young women and men, giving every right its due, tolerated this play from her while she was his wife because she was young. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) herself expressed something similar to what I am saying in another incident she herself narrates, saying:
The Abyssinians came to play in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the door, and she stood behind him, having placed her chin on the shoulder of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Let this expression not be confusing to any of you when I say "she placed her chin," and she is a woman. In the common custom or the custom of the common people, a woman is not considered to have a chin; the chin is a characteristic of men. In reality, this is a colloquial expression naming the beard as the chin. The chin is this bone on which the beard usually grows in men. So every person, whether male or female, has a chin, but not every person has a beard; rather, this is a specific characteristic of men, except in rare and unusual cases. Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) proves to the materialists and the fatalists that He is the Doer of what He wills, by creating a man without a beard and a woman with a beard, to draw the attention of these naturalists that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) creates what He wills, as He (Mighty and Majestic) said:
And your Lord creates what He wills and chooses; not for them was the choice. Exalted is Allah and high above what they associate with Him.
[Al-Qasas 28:68]
.
The point is that Lady Aisha
She placed her chin on the shoulder of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and she was sheltered by him, and she was looking at the Abyssinians as they played in the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was patient with her and would say to her in jest, "Are you tired?" She would say, "No." She said, "Until I was the one who got tired."
What did the Messenger say? He said, "Come on, what need have you prolonged until you are tired?" Here, Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) is saying.
So consider the status of the young, lively girl of tender age.
She is giving a lesson to men that if a man marries a young girl, he must treat her in a manner befitting her age and not treat her as if she has had her fill of the world and her fill of men, or the like. This story, which we are in the process of commenting on, also informs us that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased with and approved of Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was playing with her dolls, meaning with children's toys. More than that, she had, as she said,
and my girl friends also used to play with me
Sahih al-Bukhari 6130
young neighbors of her age who would come to her and play with her.
So whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, they would hide from him.
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 27:20
What does "they would hide" mean? It means they would turn their faces away and hide from him (peace be upon him) out of shyness of him. So they would hide from him, either behind a door or a curtain, or something similar that a young girl would find strange. So what did the Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) do? She said,
And he would send them to me.
Meaning, the Messenger would send them; he would go after them and perhaps joke with them by placing his hand on the head of one of them and taking her with all gentleness to her companion, Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), to play with her with her toys. She said,
but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me
Sahih al-Bukhari 6130
This is the hadith.
