Explanation of the Hadith: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a distribution of some of what he used to distribute . . . ) .

The Shaykh : In this point, namely because a person is unable to approximate the likeness of the patience of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), a second hadith was brought that relates to one of the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), which is the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And thus, the approximation and similarity will remain consistent between the person commanded to be characterized by the attribute of patience and this perfect human being, of whom you will hear what has come regarding his patience.
That is the second hadith in "The Chapter on Patience in the Face of Harm"
It was narrated by the author (may Allah have mercy on him) with his authentic chain of narration.
From Abdullah, and Abdullah here is Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, swore an oath like one of the oaths that people swear and a man of the Ansar said, 'By Allah, it is not an oath by which the Face of Allah Almighty is desired." قسم النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قسمة في بعض ما كان يقسم فقال رجل من الأنصار والله إنها لقسمة ما أريد بها وجه الله
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 390
.
This is a statement made regarding the most just of all people, namely the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said regarding him
By Allah, it is not an oath by which the Face of Allah Almighty is desired." I said, 'I والله إنها لقسمة ما أريد بها وجه الله عز وجل قلت أنا
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 390
. Ibn Mas'ud says
I will surely tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 25:32
. It appears that this Ansari said this statement away from the Messenger (peace be upon him) in the presence of the Companions, and among them was Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, so he said
I will tell the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I went to him while he was with his Companions and I spoke to him in confidence. It clearly affected him greatly, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his face changed colour so that I wished that I had not told him. Then he said, 'Musa was injured with greater than that and he endured it.'" لأقولن للنبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم فأتيته وهو في أصحابه فساررته فشقّ ذلك عليه صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم وتغير وجهه وغضب حتى وددت أني لم أكن أخبرته ثم قال قد أوذي موسى بأكثر من ذلك فصبر
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 390
. The hadith is clear in its meanings, in that when the spoils of war came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), either due to wars or due to the jizyah that he imposed as a result of the truce after the victory of the Muslim army, it was his custom (peace be upon him) that when money came to him, he would bring it to the mosque and distribute it among the people. And naturally, he would distribute it in a division in which he considered matters that other people do not perceive. For example, he might give a person more than another. Why? Because of his precedence in Islam, or his good conduct in Islam. It appears to some with deficient faith and intellect that there is favoritism in this, when in reality there is nothing of favoritism. And sometimes the opposite of that: he gives a person who is new to Islam, who has no precedence in Islam and no jihad in Islam, more than one who has precedence in Islam. So some of those with limited intellects find that objectionable and say, "How is this? He only became a Muslim yesterday; he has not yet attended a single battle. How can he be given such generosity?" This person is ignorant that the Messenger is giving him this to reconcile him, to reconcile his heart. And he may be an heir in his people, so if he draws his heart to him, those behind him from his people will be drawn in. Thus, this is a Shari'ah policy that no one does well like the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) one day made a distribution as is his custom, from such an explanation as we have mentioned. So a man from the Ansar said
it is not an oath by which the Face of Allah Almighty is desired
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 390
. So this Ansari, as I explained just now, is short-sighted; he says, "Why is this one given more than this one?" So Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) heard this word, so he conveyed it to the Messenger (peace be upon him) and whispered it to him, meaning he said it to him in secret. When he (peace be upon him) heard that, it was heavy for him; it was painful for him, and his facial features changed, and the signs of anger appeared on him, until Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) wished that he had not informed him of this news from which he (peace be upon him) was so greatly disturbed. So what was the position of the Messenger (peace be upon him) toward this accusation that that Ansari accused him of? He did not add to his saying
Moses was harmed with more than this, yet he remained patient.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6100
.
In this hadith is a reference to the verse
be not like those who abused Moses
[Al-Ahzab 33:69]
. What was their harm? The hadith is as if it is quoted from the verse: that Musa was harmed with more than this. And therefore, Allah forbade His believing servants to harm those who had harmed Musa before, meaning the Jews. What did the Jews do? They were filthy, wicked. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) was always bestowing favors upon them, always sending prophets to them, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith
Among those before you, whenever a prophet died, a prophet succeeded him.
Whenever a prophet died, a prophet succeeded him, but there is no prophet after me.
. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic), with His bestowal and favor upon the Jews by always sending prophets to them who protected them from deviation, from straying, from misguidance, from ignorance, despite that, they were harsh... they were hard-hearted, as our Lord told us in the Qur'an, such as His saying
killed the prophets without right
[Ali 'Imran 3:112]
. So those who were killing the prophets without right, it is not much for them to harm Musa. So Allah cleared him of what they said. What did they say regarding Musa, the Jews, his followers? They said that he was stingy.
And I see that the time has exceeded the appointed time, so we will postpone the completion of this explanation to the next lesson. But I mention that in the next lesson immediately, I will not be present because I am on a journey, and the lesson after that will be the meeting here, if Allah wills.
And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
