An example of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) patience when he was wronged, where he said: (Musa was wronged more than this, so he was patient).

The Shaykh : In this point—namely, that a human being cannot compare himself to the patience of Allah (Mighty and Majestic)—he brought a second hadith concerning a trait of one of Allah’s (Mighty and Majestic) creations, namely the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Thus, the comparison in similarity remains consistent between the human being who is commanded to adopt the trait of patience, and this perfect human being, of whom you will hear what has been reported regarding his patience.
That is the second hadith in the chapter on patience in the face of harm. The author (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it with his authentic chain from Abdullah, and Abdullah here is Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed a share, as he had done in some of his previous distributions. A man from the Ansar said, “By Allah, this is a distribution in which the face of Allah was not sought!” This is a statement made about the most just of people, namely the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said about him, “By Allah, this is a distribution in which the face of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) was not sought.”
I said—I am Abdullah ibn Mas’ud saying this—“I will surely tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).” It appears that this Ansari man said these words away from the Messenger (peace be upon him) in the presence of the Companions, and Abdullah ibn Mas’ud was among them. So he said, “I will surely tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).” I went to him while he was with his companions and told him in private. That distressed him (peace and blessings be upon him); his face changed and he became angry, until I wished that I had not informed him. Then he said:
Moses was harmed with more than this, yet he remained patient. قَد أُوذِيَ مُوسَى بِأَكثَرَ مِن ذَلِكَ فَصَبَرَ
Sahih al-Bukhari 6100
.
The meanings of the hadith are clear. When the spoils of war came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), either due to battles or due to the jizyah (tax on protected non-Muslims) he imposed as a result of a truce after the Muslim army’s victory, it was his custom (peace be upon him) that when money came to him, he would bring it to the mosque and distribute it among the people. Naturally, he distributed it in a way that took into account matters that other people did not perceive. For example, he might give one person more than another. Why? Because of his precedence in Islam, or his good conduct in Islam. It may appear to some with deficient faith and intellect that there is favoritism in it, even though the truth is that there is no favoritism. Sometimes, on the contrary, he would give a person who had recently embraced Islam, with no prior history in Islam and no jihad in Islam, more than someone with a history in Islam. Some with limited intellect would object and say, “How is this? He only embraced Islam yesterday! He has not attended a single battle! How can he be given such generosity?” This person is ignorant that the Messenger is giving him this to win his heart, to win his heart over. He may be a leader among his people; so if he brings his heart to him, he brings with him those behind him from his tribe.
This is a policy of a religious nature that no one handles better than the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). So, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one day distributed a share as was his custom, in the manner of the explanation we mentioned. A man from the Ansar said, “This is a distribution in which the face of Allah was not sought.” This Ansari man had a limited view, as I explained earlier, saying, “Why is this one given more than that one, for example?” Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) heard this word, so he conveyed it to the Messenger (peace be upon him) and told him in private; meaning, he said it to him secretly. When he (peace be upon him) heard that, it weighed heavily on him; it distressed him, the features of his face changed, and the signs of anger appeared on him, until Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) wished that he had not informed him of this news that caused him (peace be upon him) such great distress.
So what was the position of the Messenger (peace be upon him) toward this accusation that that Ansari man leveled against him?
He did not add to his saying:
Moses was harmed with more than this, yet he remained patient. قَد أُوذِيَ مُوسَى بِأَكثَرَ مِن ذَلِكَ فَصَبَرَ
Sahih al-Bukhari 6100
. In this hadith is a reference to the verse:
be not like those who abused Moses لَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ آذَوْا مُوسَى
[Al-Ahzab 33:69]
. What was their harm? The hadith seems to be derived from the verse; that Musa was harmed more than this. Therefore, Allah forbade His believing servants to harm those who had previously harmed Musa; namely, the Jews. What did they do? The Jews were filthy and wicked. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) was constantly bestowing favors upon them, sending prophets to them constantly and forever. Until he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
Those before you, whenever a prophet died, a prophet succeeded him. But there is no prophet after me. كان مَن قبلكم كلَّما مات نبيٌّ خَلَفَه نبيٌّ ، ألا ولا نبيَّ بعدي
