Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
This hadith, which the author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), states that when the Day of Hunayn came, which was the expedition to Ta'if that took place after the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) attacked them and gained a very large amount of war spoils, including camels, sheep, dirhams, and dinars. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) descended at al-Ja'ranah, which is a place at the end of the sacred precinct on the side of Ta'if. He descended at al-Ja'ranah and began to distribute the war spoils. He distributed to those whose hearts were to be reconciled, meaning the leaders of the tribes, to reconcile them to Islam, and gave them a large amount, until he gave one of them one hundred camels. So a man from among the people said:
By Allah, this is a distribution in which there was no justice, and the face of Allah was not sought in it والله إنَّ هذه لقسمة ما عُدل فيها وما أريد بها وجه الله
: We seek refuge in Allah. He is saying this about a distribution made by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but the love of this world, and Satan causes a person to fall into destruction. We ask Allah for well-being. This word is a word of disbelief, to attribute to Allah and His Messenger a lack of justice, and that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not seek the face of Allah with it. There is no doubt that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought the face of Allah with this distribution. He wanted to reconcile the leaders of the tribes and clans so that Islam would be strengthened, because if the masters of the people were reconciled to Islam and their faith was strengthened by it, much good would come from them, and tribes and clans would follow them in that, and Islam would be strengthened by this. But ignorance, and may Allah protect us from it, ignorance causes a person to fall into destruction. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), when he heard this word spoken about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of it. He raised it to him and informed him that this man was saying such and such. So the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed until it was like the color of the sky, meaning like gold in its yellowness and change. Then he said:
If Allah and His Apostle did not act justly, who else would act justly مَن يعدل إذا لم يعدلِ اللهُ ورسولُه ؟
Sahih al-Bukhari 3150
: And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told the truth. If the distribution of Allah is not just and the distribution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is not just, then who will be just? Who will be just? Then he said:
May Allah bestow His Mercy on Moses, for he was hurt with more than this, yet he remained patient. يرحم الله موسى لقد أوذي بأكثر مِن هذا فصبر
Sahih al-Bukhari 6336
: And the point here, the point of this hadith is this word, that the prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) are afflicted and they are patient. So our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was spoken to in this way after eight years of his migration, meaning not at the beginning of the call, after Allah had enabled him, and after his truthfulness had become known, and after Allah had shown people the signs of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the horizons and in themselves. And yet it is said: This distribution was not just and the face of Allah was not sought in it. So if this is what a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), do not be surprised if people say about a scholar from among the scholars: that this scholar has such and such, and they describe him with defects, because Satan is the one who urges these people to criticize the scholars, because if they criticize the scholars and their words fall in the eyes of the people, no one will remain to lead the people with the Book of Allah. Who will lead them with the Book of Allah if they do not trust the scholars and their words?
The devils and the party of Satan will lead them. And for this reason, the backbiting of scholars is much greater than the backbiting of non-scholars, because the backbiting of non-scholars is personal; if it harms, it only harms the one who was backbitten and about whom the backbiting was spoken. But the backbiting of scholars harms all of Islam, because the scholars are the bearers of the banner of Islam. So if trust in their words falls, the banner of Islam falls, and this becomes a harm to the Muslim community. So if the flesh of people is like the flesh of a dead animal through backbiting, then the flesh of scholars is like the flesh of a dead animal that is poisoned, because of the great harm in it. So I say: Do not be surprised if you hear someone cursing the scholars, and this was said about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Be patient. A person should be patient and seek reward from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and know that the outcome is for the pious, no matter what. As long as a person is in mindfulness of Allah and on the light of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), then the outcome is for him. Also, there are some people who have a friend or a relative who makes a mistake once, and they describe him with a defect and curse and insult him, and may Allah protect us from it, for one sin. It is for the one who was described with a defect to be patient and to know that the prophets were cursed, afflicted, and lied about, and it was said: They are madmen, and they are poets, and they are soothsayers, and they are sorcerers.
but they were patient over [the effects of] denial, and they were harmed until Our victory came to them فصبروا على ما كذبوا وأوذوا حتى أتاهم نصرنا
[Al-An'am 6:34]
Thus says Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
So in this hadith is evidence that the imam has the right to give to whom he sees a public benefit in his giving, even if it is more than others, if he sees a public benefit for Islam in that. It is not a personal benefit where he favors whom he loves and withholds from whom he does not love. No. If he sees a public benefit for Islam in that and increases the giving, then that is up to him, and he is accountable for this before Allah. And it is not permissible for anyone to object to him. If he objects to him, he has wronged himself.
And in it is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took as an example those who passed before of the messengers. For this reason he said:
Moses was tormented more than this, but he showed patience. ولقد أوذي موسى بأكثر من هذا فصبر
Sahih Muslim 1062b
, because Allah the Exalted says:
There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding لَقَدْ كَانَ فِي قَصَصِهِمْ عِبْرَةٌ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَاب
[Yusuf 12:111]
, and He says (Mighty and Majestic):
Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so follow their guidance. أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ هَدَى اللَّهُ فَبِهُدَاهُمُ اقْتَدِه
: So He commanded His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to follow the guidance of the prophets before him. And likewise, it is prescribed for us to follow the example of the prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) in patience against harm, and to seek reward from Allah, and to know that this is an increase in our ranks with the seeking of reward, and an expiation for our sins. And success is from Allah.
