The Importance of Hajj in Islam.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows: We thank Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for His blessings and favors, in that He has prescribed seasons of goodness for His servants so that they may increase in good. The month of fasting has not yet ended before the months of Hajj to the House of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) have begun. The first of the months of Hajj is Shawwal. Thus, the servants move from one season to another. Allah did not prescribe Hajj for the people of Makkah and the slaughtering of sacrificial animals without also prescribing for people from other lands to draw near to Him with 'Id sacrifices. Praise and grace belong to Allah for these blessings.
O my brothers: This gathering is the monthly meeting that takes place on the evening of the third Saturday of every month. We ask Allah to make it beneficial and to make our work sincere for His face.
We chose to hold it after Maghrib so that there would be ample time for speaking and answering questions. We begin first with Hajj, discussing its importance in the religion of Islam.
Islam is built on five بني الإسلام على خمس
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5001Sahih (Darussalam)
meaning: upon five pillars:
to testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Muhammad is His Apostle شهادة أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمداً رسول الله
Sahih al-Bukhari 2157
. This is one of them, and it is the key to the work; no deed is valid without it. Even if a person fasts, pays zakah, performs Hajj, and prays, but does not testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, it will not be accepted. His Hajj will not be accepted, his fasting will not be accepted, his charity will not be accepted, and his prayer will not be accepted.
If someone were to say: Does a person not say in prayer: "I testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah"? We say: Yes, he says this. But have you seen if he says this while worshipping the dead, would he be truthful in this testimony? No. Therefore, his prayer is not accepted from him. And his testimony that there is no god but Allah is a false testimony, for whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah means: there is no true object of worship but Allah. It is not possible for him to worship anyone other than the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
The second pillar: establishing the prayer, meaning: performing it upright according to how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prayed, who said to his Ummah:
offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers صلوا كما رأيتموني أصلي
Sahih al-Bukhari 6008
.
The third: giving zakah, meaning: giving the obligatory wealth in assets to those who are entitled to it. For this reason, we say: "giving zakah" has the second object omitted, and the implied meaning is: giving zakah to its rightful recipient.
The fourth: fasting Ramadan.
The fifth: Hajj to the Sacred House of Allah.
Thus, Hajj is in a high rank in this Islamic religion, for it is one of its great pillars and foundations. The obligation of Hajj was delayed. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) did not obligate it upon His servants until late, in the ninth or tenth year, because Makkah was under the control of Quraysh before that, who prevented whom they wished and permitted whom they wished. For this reason—listen, O my brother—the polytheists prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), who had come performing 'Umrah with sacrificial animals, calling out to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). When he approached the Sacred Precinct, they prevented him. Where? At al-Hudaybiyyah. They said: It is not possible for you to enter Makkah, lest people say: We were forced. And there occurred between them and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) a peace treaty whose appearance was humiliation, whose appearance was the humiliation of the Muslims' right. But it was an opening, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) named it, so He said in His Book:
Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought [and those who did so after it]. Those are greater in degree than they who spent afterwards and fought. But to all Allah has promised the best [reward] لا يَسْتَوِي مِنْكُمْ مَنْ أَنْفَقَ مِنْ قَبْلِ الْفَتْحِ وَقَاتَلَ أُوْلَئِكَ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً مِنْ الَّذِينَ أَنْفَقُوا مِنْ بَعْدُ وَقَاتَلُوا وَكُلاًّ وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْحُسْنَى
[Al-Hadid 57:10]
The opening referred to here is the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah. Therefore, it was part of the wisdom of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that the obligation of Hajj to the House of Allah was delayed until either the ninth or the tenth year.
