The Status of Hajj in Islam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Issue: What is the status of Hajj in Islam?
Its status is that it is one of the pillars of Islam,By the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (Islam is built on five: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakah, fasting Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the Sacred House).
It is obligatory by the consensus of Muslims, based on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family),Allah the Exalted said:
And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.
[Al-Imran: 97],And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: (Indeed, Allah has obligated Hajj upon you, so perform Hajj).
So whoever leaves it while it is obligatory upon him, if he denies its obligation, he is a disbeliever due to his denial of its obligation, unless he is a recent convert to Islam and does not know the rulings of Islam; in that case, he is excused for his ignorance and is taught. If he persists in denial after he has learned, he is a disbeliever. As for if he leaves it out of negligence and laziness, the stronger opinion is: that he does not become a disbeliever; because there is no disbelief for leaving acts of worship except for prayer alone. Abdullah ibn Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him), who was from the Tabi'un, said: [The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not consider any act of worship whose abandonment constitutes disbelief except for prayer]. So whoever is negligent about Hajj until he dies, he does not become a disbeliever according to the stronger opinion. And I said "according to the stronger opinion" becauseBecause some scholars say: he becomes a disbeliever;because of His saying, the Exalted:
And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.
[Al-Imran: 97] meaning: whoever disbelieves and does not perform Hajj. And this opinion is a narration from Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him),But the stronger opinion is what I explained to you: that he does not become a disbeliever.
