Making up the fast of a pregnant woman

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Two years ago, during Ramadan, I was ill and unable to fast for seven days. Afterwards, I stood up [to pray] and fed a poor person for each day. Is that sufficient? Do I still have to make up those days? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.

Answer: Yes, it is obligatory for you to make up the fasts in addition to feeding. If you broke your fast because of the pregnancy, then two things are required of you: feeding and making up the fasts. The feeding has been done and you have fulfilled it. What remains is making up the fasts. However, if you broke your fast for the sake of your own health, then you only have to make up the fasts without feeding.
As for the idea that making up the fasts is waived, as you mentioned, that is incorrect. It is a rejected school of thought. Even if it is attributed to Ibn 'Abbas or Ibn 'Umar, it is the weaker opinion. It is obligatory for a pregnant woman and a nursing woman, if they have broken their fasts, to make up the fasts in all cases. As for feeding, that is where the distinction lies. If the fast was broken solely for the sake of the pregnancy, she must feed a poor person for each day in addition to making up the fasts. If the fast was broken for the sake of the pregnant woman's health, then she only has to make up the fasts.
