Dutifulness to the Father
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: I am a young man of nineteen years old. My father passed away while he was not pleased with me, and this feeling has been tormenting me day and night. What can I do now to ease my conscience, which is suffering greatly?
Answer: It is obligatory for a son to be dutiful to his father, not to anger him, and not to be undutiful to him, because the right of the father is great. However, if a person has committed some wrongdoing toward his father, he must seek his forgiveness and ask for his pardon, and request his excuse if he is still alive.
As for if the father died in this state, having been angry with his son, then there is nothing left at that time except for this son to repent to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and seek His forgiveness for what happened, and to do something of dutifulness for his father after his death, by giving charity on his behalf, making du'a' for him, and seeking forgiveness for him, and to increase in this, so that perhaps Allah may alleviate the right of his father from him.
