The Obligation of Dutifulness to Parents
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence! Many fathers and mothers complain about the undutifulness of their children. Is there any blessed guidance?
Answer:
Yes. It is obligatory for children to be dutiful to their parents and to fear Allah, for undutifulness is among the ugliest of major sins. And He, the Exalted, says: [Al-Nisa: 36], and He, the Glorious and Exalted, says: [Luqman: 14]. Allah has commanded gratitude to Him and gratitude to one’s parents. So it is obligatory for all children, both males and females, to be dutiful to their parents, to treat them well, and to guard against undutifulness, whether through bad speech, bad action, harshness, raising one’s voice, or disobeying commands that they need and which are not disobedience to Allah. All of this is obligatory upon them.
So he must be dutiful to his parents, listen to them, and obey them in what is right, and he must guard against raising his voice at them or cursing them. All of this is wrong. In the authentic hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1978b And in another hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 90a It was said, “O Messenger of Allah! Does a man curse his parents?” The people were shocked by this. They were shocked by it? How can a man curse his parents? “Does a man curse his parents?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 90a Meaning: he exposes himself... he brings it upon himself. So if one who brings it upon himself has committed a major sin, what about the one who directly curses? If he curses the fathers and mothers of people, he is cursing his own parents; because he is the one who brought it upon himself. What about the one who curses his parents and invokes curses upon them? His sin is even greater.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: — he repeated it three times —? They said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3021Sahih (Darussalam) — he placed it alongside shirk (associating partners with Allah), as a companion to shirk —. And he was leaning, so he sat up and said: .
So it is obligatory to guard against this great calamity. It is obligatory for the son to fear Allah, to be dutiful to his parents, to treat them well, to listen to them and obey them in what is right, and to give more care to his mother, more dutifulness to her, and more attention to her; because her right is greater. A man said, “O Messenger of Allah! Who is most deserving of my good companionship?” He said: He said, “Then who?” He said: He said, “Then who?” He said: He said, “Then who?” He said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1897Hasan (Darussalam) And in the other wording, he said: “O Messenger of Allah! Who is most deserving of my good companionship?” He said: He said, “Then who?” He said: He said, “Then who?” He said: He said, “Then who?” He said: in the fourth degree. Yes.

Answer:
Yes. It is obligatory for children to be dutiful to their parents and to fear Allah, for undutifulness is among the ugliest of major sins. And He, the Exalted, says:
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good
Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
So he must be dutiful to his parents, listen to them, and obey them in what is right, and he must guard against raising his voice at them or cursing them. All of this is wrong. In the authentic hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah cursed him who cursed his parents
Abusing one's parents is one of the major sins.
من الكبائر شتم الرجل والديهone abuses the father of another man, who in turn abuses his father. One abuses his mother and he in turn abuses his (the former's) mother.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Shall I inform you of the greatest of major sins? Shall I inform you of the greatest of major sins? Shall I inform you of the greatest of major sins?
The major sins are associating others with Allah, disobeying the parents
And false speech, and false testimony.
Who is most deserving of my good companionship?” He said:
