The questioner : He says in his letter that he has proposed to a woman, and he says he wants to marry a widow out of compassion for her because she is a widow and poor, but people advised him against her and said do not marry her because they see something in her that is a defect. So should he proceed with marrying her or not?

The Shaykh : If this woman has a defect in her character or her religion, we do not advise him to proceed with marrying her. And if the defect in her does not relate to character or religion, then there is nothing wrong with marrying her, but he should look at her before doing so.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So that the matter becomes clear to him, because perhaps the defect mentioned to him is slight.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : But it may be great and more than he imagines. This is the detail in this issue.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If the defect relates to character and religion, he should not marry her and should not approach her.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And if it relates to another matter, then there is nothing wrong with proceeding to marry her, but he should look at her before doing so.

The questioner : He is...

The Shaykh : So that he is on clear knowledge.

The questioner : Yes, he is confused. He says that her material circumstances are weak, relying on Allah and then on people. A person advised him against her, and he asked him about her: is she bad in her honor? He said, I do not know anything about her. But this girl has nothing, and as for me, I do not advise you to marry her, and I am free. He says, my intention is to add her to my family and care for her. Nothing has been established against her regarding what he was advised about her.

The Shaykh : The important thing, as we mentioned first.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And the issue that she is poor: if he marries her, perhaps Allah will enrich her through him.

The questioner : If Allah wills.
