The questioner : He says: I have heard a hadith, the meaning of which is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Do you know who the bankrupt person is?" They said: "The bankrupt person among us is the one who has no dirham." He said (peace and blessings be upon him):
The stingy person is the one before whom I am mentioned, and he does not send Salat upon me.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3546
or as he said. The question is that I am a student at the Institute of Islamic Studies and a hadith teacher. When the teacher explains a hadith, he frequently mentions the Messenger. Is it obligatory for us to send blessings upon him every time, or is the first time sufficient? Please inform us. May Allah reward you abundantly, and we thank you for this great attention, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah support you?

The Shaykh : As for the hadith he referred to, I do not know it. What I know is that the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) said:
The bankrupt person is the one who comes on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like mountains, and he comes having wronged this one, struck this one, insulted this one, and taken the wealth of this one. So this one takes from his good deeds, and this one from his good deeds, and this one from his good deeds. If anything remains of his good deeds, otherwise they take from their sins and he is thrown into them, then he is thrown into the Fire.
This is what I know of the hadith of the bankrupt person that he referred to. As for sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he is mentioned, the majority of scholars hold that it is recommended (mustahabb) and not obligatory. Some of them hold that it is obligatory, based on the hadith of Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit one day and said:
Ameen, Ameen, Ameen
three times. He was asked about that, and he said:
Jibril came to me and said: May the nose of the man be crushed who is mentioned to and he does not send blessings upon you. Say "Ameen." So I said "Ameen."
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : It is known that this is a supplication, a supplication of frustration against the one about whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is mentioned and who does not send blessings upon him. For this reason, some scholars derived from this that it is obligatory for a person, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is mentioned to him, to send blessings upon him, because a supplication against one who has not done something is evidence of the obligation of that thing.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for the one who hears the mention of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in one who repeatedly recites a hadith in the mosque, or in the school, or in the institute, if he sends blessings upon him the first time, that is sufficient, as the scholars said regarding one who repeatedly enters the mosque: if he sends the greeting of the mosque the first time and knows from himself that he will enter repeatedly, he is content with that. Then, the teacher usually says "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said" or "It was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." When the speaker says "peace and blessings be upon him," he has thereby supplicated to Allah to send blessings upon His Prophet. So the function of the listener in such a case is to say "Ameen."

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : He should say "Ameen," and his saying "Ameen" is like his saying (peace and blessings be upon him), because both the one who supplicates and the one who says "Ameen" are supplicants.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As Allah the Exalted said about Musa:
And Moses said, "Our Lord, indeed You have given Pharaoh and his establishment splendor and wealth in the worldly life, our Lord, that they may lead [men] astray from Your way. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment."
[Yunus 10:88]
Allah the Exalted said:
[Allah] said, "Your supplication has been answered." So remain on a right course and follow not the way of those who do not know." قَالَ قَدْ أُجِيبَتْ دَعْوَتُكُمَا فَاسْتَقِيمَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعَانِ سَبِيلَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
[Yunus 10:89]
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So the supplication of you both was completed. The scholars said that Musa was supplicating and Harun was saying "Ameen."

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Therefore, we say: if you hear a speaker say "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said" and you say "Ameen," it is as if you said "peace and blessings be upon him," because you said "Ameen" to the speaker's supplication. Yes, if a person thinks that this speaker said "peace and blessings be upon him" as a matter of custom and did not intend the supplication, then we say the listener says "peace and blessings be upon him" and does not say "Ameen," if he knows that this speaker's saying "peace and blessings be upon him" has become a habit on his tongue without intention, as if he did not supplicate for blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). But if he knows that he is a person of awareness, that the speaker is a person of awareness, and that whenever he says "peace and blessings be upon him" he feels that he is supplicating to Allah to send blessings upon His Prophet and peace, then he is content with saying "Ameen." Yes.

The questioner : Here also another question arises, which is that.
