Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do you know who the bankrupt is?
The question here is for the purpose of information, which is intended to convey a statement, because the questioner sometimes asks out of ignorance and does not know, so he asks others; and sometimes he asks for the purpose of alerting, to alert the addressee to what is being presented to him, or to establish a ruling. An example of the second is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he was asked about selling fresh dates for dry dates:
Does it decrease when it dries?
meaning: the fresh dates. They said: Yes. So he prohibited that. As for here, he will inform the Companions of a matter they do not know, or they do not know the intent of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in it. He said:
Do you know who the bankrupt is? They said: O Messenger of Allah, the bankrupt among us is the one who has no dirham and no goods.
meaning he has no money and no tangible goods of wealth. This is the bankrupt, because he is poor. The bankrupt means the poor, and this is the known meaning of the bankrupt among people when they say: So-and-so is bankrupt, meaning he has no money and no goods, but he is poor. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
The poor of my Umma would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers and fasts and Zakat
Sahih Muslim 2581
And in a narration:
The one who comes with good deeds like mountains.
he comes with great good deeds, so he has a wealth of good deeds, but he comes having insulted this one, struck this one, taken the wealth of this one, and shed the blood of this one, meaning he transgressed against people in various ways of transgression. And the people want to take their right, which they do not take in this world, they will take it in the Hereafter. So retribution is taken for them from him, and this one is taken from his good deeds, and this one from his good deeds, and this one from his good deeds, with justice and retribution by right. If his good deeds are exhausted, the sins of the others are taken and placed upon him, and then he is thrown into the Fire, may Allah protect us. His good deeds are exhausted: the reward of prayer ends, the reward of zakah ends, the reward of fasting ends, all that he has of good deeds ends, so the sins of the others are taken and placed upon him, and then he is thrown into the Fire, may Allah protect us. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth, for this is the true bankrupt. As for the bankrupt of this world, this world comes and goes; perhaps a person is poor and becomes rich in the evening, or the reverse. But the total bankruptcy is for a person to be bankrupt of the good deeds he labored for, which were before him on the Day of Resurrection, he sees them, and then they are taken from him for so-and-so and so-and-so. And in this is a warning against transgressing against creation, and that it is obligatory for a person to fulfill what is due to people in his life before his death, so that the retribution in this world is from what he is able to give. As for the Hereafter, there is no dirham or dinar with which to ransom himself; there are only good deeds. He says:
So this one is taken from his good deeds, and this one from his good deeds. If his good deeds are exhausted, the sins of the others are taken and placed upon him, and then he is thrown into the Fire.
But this hadith does not mean that he will remain in the Fire forever, but he will be punished according to the amount of the sins of the others that were placed upon him, and then his end is Paradise, because the believer does not remain in the Fire forever. So the meaning is that he remains in the Fire according to what he received of the sins of the others, and then his end is Paradise. But the heat of the Fire is severe; one cannot endure the Fire. A person cannot endure the Fire, not even for one moment of the Fire of this world, let alone the Fire of the Hereafter. May Allah protect me and you from it.
The student: Amen.

The Shaykh : And Allah knows best.
