He says: I vowed to Allah the Exalted to slaughter an animal, and I have fulfilled the vow and I and my family have eaten from it. I have heard that it is not permissible to eat from it, so what is upon me? Do I have to slaughter again?

The questioner : He says: I vowed to Allah the Exalted to slaughter an animal, and I have fulfilled the vow and slaughtered, but I and my family ate from it. I have heard that it is not permissible to eat from it, so what is upon me? Do I have to slaughter a second time, or do I have to give out the amount that I and my family ate, which is approximately three kilograms of meat? Please advise me, for I am confused, or is there nothing upon me? May Allah reward you abundantly?

The Shaykh : The vow of slaughter is divided into two categories.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : One is that it is an act of devotion to Allah, where the person intends to draw near to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). In this case, one does not eat from it, but rather distributes it as charity to the poor.
The second category is that the vow of slaughter is a custom, not an act of worship, meaning that the intention is for joy and happiness, gathering people around it, and similar permissible matters. In this case, it does not have the ruling of worship, but rather it is a permissible vow; if the person wishes, he may do it, and if he wishes, he may expiate for it with the expiation of an oath and not do it.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for this category, if he does it and fulfills what he vowed, he and his family may eat from it, and there is no blame on him for that.
As for the first category, which was intended to draw near to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), we have said that it is to be distributed as charity to the poor. If he has eaten from it, let him guarantee the amount he ate and give it as charity to the poor.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
