The questioner : The sender states in it that a person forbade himself from eating anything from another person’s hand; does he have to pay an expiation, and what is it?
The Shaykh : This issue, the issue of forbidding what Allah has made lawful, Allah has informed us about it, Glorified and Exalted is He, where He said:[At-Tahrim 66:1-2] So Allah made the forbidding of the lawful an oath.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : If a person forbids himself from something, meaning he intends to abstain from it using this formula, then he is in the position of one who has sworn an oath. He may do what he forbade and then pay the expiation for an oath. The expiation for an oath is feeding ten poor people from the mid-grade of what we feed our families, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. Whoever cannot find the means to do so must fast for three days.
The questioner : Yes.
