On the interpretation of the verse: “And you see the mountains, thinking them stationary, while they pass by like the passing of clouds.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our esteemed Shaykh—may Allah preserve you—regarding the interpretation of the verse:
And you see the mountains, thinking them rigid, while they will pass as the passing of clouds وَتَرَى الْجِبَالَ تَحْسَبُهَا جَامِدَةً وَهِيَ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ السَّحَابِ
[An-Naml 27:88]
. Shaykh al-Sha'rawi interpreted this verse as affirming the rotation of the Earth. He stated that the movement of clouds carried by the wind is like the movement of mountains carried by the moving Earth, and he cited evidenceThe Shaykh : that on the Day of Resurrection, this will not be a mere perception but a reality, and that the Earth and the heavens will be completely changed, so you will not see any crookedness or deviation in the Earth. Do you have a word on this matter? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Naturally, I do not have the verses preceding this one at hand, but what I know from the past scholars of tafsir regarding His saying—Exalted is He—:
And you see the mountains, thinking them rigid, while they will pass as the passing of clouds وَتَرَى الْجِبَالَ تَحْسَبُهَا جَامِدَةً وَهِيَ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ السَّحَابِ
[An-Naml 27:88]
is that this is:
on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth يَوْمَ تُبَدَّلُ الأَرْضُ غَيْرَ الأَرْضِ
[Ibrahim 14:48]
. So this change, in the other verse:
And the mountains are made to move وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ
; this change does not occur in this era in which people live in tranquility on this Earth, but rather that is
on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth يَوْمَ تُبَدَّلُ الأَرْضُ غَيْرَ الأَرْضِ
[Ibrahim 14:48]
.
And I say on this occasion: Many of the writers or preachers today try to force the application of some Qur'anic verses to inventions or astronomical ideas discovered in the present age, thinking that this is a victory for Islam. We say: Islam does not need the forced interpretation of verses contrary to what the scholars of tafsir, both the Salaf and the Khalaf, did, nor any forced interpretation that the context and sequence of the verses cannot bear. So I do not find what was reported fromThe Shaykh : al-Sha'rawi to be correct; rather, it is contrary to the position of the scholars of tafsir.
Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
