The questioner : ... When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ... visited Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas in the illness in which he died, at the end of the hadith: Sunan al-Bayhaqi 16:416, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed grief for him because he died in Makkah; can you clarify this for us?
The Shaykh : ... The ruling for the first migrants from Makkah to Madinah is that it is not permissible for them to remain in Makkah for more than three days. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forgave this man for dying in Makkah. It would have been better for him to return to his place of migration, Madinah, and die there, rather than dying in Makkah, even though Makkah is the best of lands. As came in the authentic hadith, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) resolved to migrate from Makkah to Madinah, he faced Makkah and said (peace and blessings be upon him):, even though Makkah is better than all lands, including Madinah, so Makkah is better than Madinah. And although Imam al-Suyuti (may Allah have mercy on him) authored a treatise that went to waste, because he claimed in it that Madinah is better than Makkah, the position of the majority of scholars is that Makkah is better than Madinah. Sufficient for you as evidence is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): . But those who migrated from Makkah to Madinah are not permitted to return and reside in their original land, which is Makkah, because that would nullify their migration which was for Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). Therefore, it came in "Sahih Muslim" that it is not permissible for a migrant to stay in Makkah for more than three days. As for this one for whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed grief, he expressed grief for him because he died in Makkah, and it would have been better for him to die in Madinah, but lifespans are in the hand of Allah and not in his hand, and this is the natural order...
Yes.
O Allah, let my companions complete their migration, and do not turn them back on their heels, but the wretched one is Sa'd ibn Khawlah
