Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (He who gives his wealth to purify himself)]
Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Layl:18] Meaning: He gives his wealth to those who are entitled to it in a manner that purifies him,Meaning: he becomes pure through it,Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Tawbah:103] So His saying: [Al-Layl:18] indicates that he does not squander, nor does he withhold, but rather he gives wealth in a manner that results in purification,And the criterion for that is what Allah mentioned in Surat al-Furqan: [Al-Furqan:67] We find that some people, to whom Allah has given wealth, are stingy and miserly, to the extent that they do not fulfill what is obligatory for their wives, children, and relatives. We also see some people to whom Allah has restricted their provision and made it somewhat narrow, yet they go and borrow from people in order to complete their house so that it is like the house of so-and-so and so-and-so, or in order to buy a luxurious car like the car of so-and-so and so-and-so. Both of these methodologies and paths are invalid,The first: one is shortcoming,And the second: the other is excess, and it is obligatory for a person to spend according to his circumstances [Al-Layl:18] .
If someone were to say: Is it permissible for a person to borrow in order to give charity?
No; because charity is voluntary, and taking on debt is a great danger; because debt is not a trivial matter. If a person dies, his soul is suspended by his debt until it is paid off on his behalf. Many heirs do not care about the deceased's debt; you find them delaying, stalling, and perhaps not paying it in full, may Allah keep us safe. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to ask when a funeral was brought to him: Does he have a debt that he can pay?If they say: If the answer was no, he said: Pray over your companion, and he did not pray over him. And he informed (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that martyrdom in the cause of Allah expiates everything except debt. So debt is a matter of great gravity; it is not permissible for a person to be negligent regarding it.
Allah the Exalted said:
[He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself
الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىTake, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah 's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
[He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself
الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىAnd [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate
وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا أَنْفَقُوا لَمْ يُسْرِفُوا وَلَمْ يَقْتُرُوا وَكَانَ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ قَوَاماًwho gives [from] his wealth to purify himself
