The Ruling on Tayammum When Water Is Available
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! Two or three nights ago, some people performed tayammum for the Maghrib and Isha prayers because the water was cold. There were people who heated the water, performed wudu, and combined the Maghrib and Isha prayers by advancing them (jam' taqdim). They prayed the voluntary prayer and witr, fearing that their wudu would be broken?
This action combines two things,The first: Those who performed tayammum while it was possible to heat the water and perform wudu with it, their prayer is invalid and they must repeat it; because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has permitted us tayammum only when we cannot find water or when we are ill and unable to use it.
The second: Those who performed wudu and prayed Isha with Maghrib by advancing them, and then performed witr afterwards out of fear of the hardship of performing wudu a second time, this is valid and there is no harm in it. But those who did not perform wudu must repeat the Maghrib and Isha prayers as an obligation, and repeat the voluntary prayers as a voluntary act; because the voluntary prayer is voluntary, whoever wishes to make it up does so, and whoever wishes not to make it up does not.
Then his saying: If the air is cold, praise be to Allah, there is something to protect against the air. The tent is erected and standing, protecting against the air. If you turn your back to the wind, it will not harm you.
So the condition for tayammum is the inability to use water, whether due to illness, the absence of water, or because it is cold and we cannot bear it and we have nothing to heat it with. Subhan Allah! When people submit to laziness, the matter becomes easy for them, meaning that they make it easy for themselves to neglect obligatory duties. People in the past would travel in winter on camels and be exposed to such cold or more, and such wind or more. They would stand at the pond, its top frozen with ice, and they would break the ice and bathe with the water beneath it and be patient; because they had strong faith. And although we do not agree with them in this action, because there is fear for the self from it, nevertheless they did not care about this. And these people have what to heat the water with, yet they are lazy and perform tayammum while water is present.
The questioner: Some of the common people perform tayammum in severe cold. Are they ordered to make up the previous prayers? The Shaykh: Yes.
The one who performs tayammum while it is possible to use water must make up the prayer.
