Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (And if they see a sign, they turn away from it and say, "It is continuous magic")

And for this he said:
And if they see a miracle, they turn awayوَإِنْ يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا
[Al-Qamar: 2] (sign) : An indefinite noun in the context of a condition (if they see) meaning whatever sign they see, they turn away from it and do not accept it, and they combine turning away with denial by the tongue: (turn away) : meaning with their hearts and bodies, (and say) with their tongues: (this is continuous magic) and you know that magic affects not the hearts of people but the vision of people.
Have you not seen that when Musa (peace be upon him) cast down the magicians, their magic made it seem to him that the ropes and staffs were moving? The entire river turned into moving snakes, until Musa felt fear in his heart from the horror of what he saw. But did those ropes and staffs actually turn into snakes, or were they as they were? They were as they were, but according to the viewer's perception, they were snakes. They say: (This is magic) the magic of Muhammad, until our eyes saw the moon, which is one, as two halves.
and say, "Passing magic."وَيَقُولُوا سِحْرٌ مُسْتَمِرٌّ
[Al-Qamar: 2] It was said: The meaning is: vanishing and departing, from the word for passing by a thing when one goes beyond it.He said: This is magic and it will not settle, and it has no stability. And it was said: (continuous) meaning that all the signs He brings are magic.Meaning: Continuous from the passing of a thing and the persistence of a thing, and in any case, they denied and lied. And for this he said:
and they liedوَكَذَّبُوا
[Al-Qamar: 3] meaning: they lied to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and lied about his signs:
and followed their desiresوَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ
[Al-Qamar: 3] meaning: what they desire of falsehood:
But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُسْتَقِرٌّ
[Al-Qamar: 3] meaning: every matter must have a settlement. So these liars, their settlement is humiliation and loss in this world, and the Fire in the Hereafter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who followed him, their matter is settled with victory and support in this world, and Paradise in the Hereafter. May Allah make us and you among them.
