Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (The assembly will be defeated and they will turn their backs in flight)
Allah the Exalted said: [Surah al-Qamar: 45] (defeated) means: they will be humiliated with the worst kind of humiliation, and they will turn their backs in flight, unable to resist, defend, or flee,Although they used to say: (We are the majority and will be victorious) but they will have no victory. This is what happened, praise be to Allah. The first time it occurred was at the Battle of Badr, when their leaders, elders, and nobles gathered, numbering between nine hundred and a thousand men, against three hundred and a few dozen men with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They were defeated—praise be to Allah—with the worst defeat, and news spread about them. Twenty-four of their leaders were thrown into a foul, stinking well of the wells of Badr. This is undoubtedly the worst defeat. And therefore he said: (The assembly will be defeated and they will turn their backs in flight) This is their punishment in this world. And in the Hereafter, Allah the Exalted said: [Surah al-Qamar: 46] meaning: Add to that that the Hour is their appointed time, which is the Day of Resurrection. [Surah al-Qamar: 46] meaning: it is more severe in destruction and more bitter in taste, because the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe than the punishment of this world.
