Ruling on Men Wearing a Ring
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! What is the ruling on men wearing a ring?
Wearing a ring for men—Meaning: Wearing a ring—if it is made of gold, it is forbidden, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding gold and silk: “It is lawful for the women of my Ummah and forbidden for the men.” He saw a man wearing a gold ring and said: “Is one of you going to take a piece of fire and put it in his hand?” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the ring from his hand with his own hand and threw it away. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) left, it was said to the man: “Take your ring.”He said: I will not take a ring that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) threw away.
As for if it is made of something other than gold, such as silver, then if it is for a need, it is a recommended practice (sunnah), such as for a judge, a ruler, a minister, or anyone who has dealings that require authentication by a seal. This is a recommended practice (sunnah); because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was corresponding with kings, it was said to him: “They do not accept anything but a sealed letter,” so he made a ring. But if it is merely for adornment, it is not recommended for him.
