The questioner : He says: May the Shaykh be respected, on the occasion of the summer vacation, I would like to present a problem that some people fall into, which occurs during celebrations. It is that some people want to honor their guest, so you find them slaughtering a sacrificial animal, and it turns out to be more than needed, so they throw away the rest. What is your advice to these people, especially since we are approaching the season of weddings and the like? Is there any advice for these people? And is there any advice for the one who is not satisfied except with a sacrificial animal and is not satisfied with other food?
The Shaykh : The advice, first, is for the one who wants to honor his guest with a sacrificial animal. We say: if the guest is numerous and they can consume the sacrificial animal, there is no harm; this is better than going and buying meat. But if the guest is one or two people who cannot consume the sacrificial animal, do not slaughter for them, because this is extravagance which Allah has forbidden, as He the Exalted said:[Al-A'raf 7:31] Yes, if we suppose that the man who is a guest in someone’s house is an important man of value, there is no harm in slaughtering a sacrificial animal for him, if you find people who will benefit from it after honoring the guest, just as the Ansari man slaughtered a sacrificial animal for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) when he stayed with him as a guest, along with Abu Bakr and 'Umar. He took the knife to slaughter, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: and he permitted him to slaughter it. But it is known that in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), meat and food were not thrown away, but people benefited from it. As for the guest who does not see his honor except through slaughtering for him, my advice to him is to abandon this ignorance, because this is from the deeds of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. Honoring the guest is done with what is customary without extravagance. You do not condition people to honor you with sacrificial animals; it is sufficient if they meet you with a pleasant face, an open chest, and good speech and greeting. This is sufficient. Yes.
