I am a young man who repented with a sincere repentance—praise be to Allah—but after a while, I found myself falling into sin, then repenting, then longing for the sin, then regretting it and repenting.

The questioner : The honorable Shaykh says: I am a young man who repented with a sincere repentance—praise be to Allah. But after a while, I found myself falling into sin, then repenting. Then I long for the sin, then I regret it and repent, and so on. Please advise me, may Allah reward you with good, what should I do at the beginning of this year?

The Shaykh : I ask Allah to accept the repentance of us all. We congratulate our brother on his repentance. We ask Him to make him steadfast in it. We ask the Exalted to make him steadfast in it. He must protect himself from this sin as much as possible. But if his soul overpowers him, and then he regrets it and repents with a sincere repentance, resolving not to do it in the future, then Allah will accept his repentance, because he is certainly one who is excessive toward himself in his persistence in this sin. And Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
[Az-Zumar 39:53]
. So we congratulate our brother on what Allah has bestowed upon him of repentance. We advise him to stand firm against the impulses of Satan and the desires of the soul, and to be patient. And if he restrains himself and is patient, it will become easy for him to abandon the sin he was accustomed to before. Yes.
