Discussion of the Verse of Purity.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for what concerns purity, which is the topic of this gathering, I want one of you to read the Verse of Purity. Do you have the ability? Who has the ability to recite the Verse of Purity? Please, stand up, remain standing so that the people can hear?

The questioner : I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
.
The Shaykh : Well done, may Allah bless you and reward you with good. But here is something we should point out, and praise be to Allah, that the matter proceeded as it should: First, you heard his recitation; he recited:
and your feet وأرجلِكم
and your feet, whereas what is in the Qur'an between us is:
and your feetوَأَرْجُلَكُمْ
with the accusative case. There is no doubt that the second recitation is correct,
and your feet وأرجلِكم
a recitation of the seven canonical readings, established from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). However, the person who recites for learning or teaching recites with all the readings, while the one who recites before the general public in a country where only one reading is understood should not deviate from that single reading, because the layperson does not grasp it. Either he will criticize the reciter and say, "No, my brother," or he will try to imitate the reciter and make a mistake, because he is a layperson. Therefore, I advise our brothers who know several readings not to recite in the country anything other than what their common people know and what is present in their mushafs, so that confusion and doubt do not arise. Second, some people, for example, are overcome by breathlessness and cannot complete the verse, so they stop at a phrase, then repeat what came before it when intending to resume recitation. They repeat what came before it based on the assumption that what follows is connected to it, not realizing that what came before is also connected to what came before it. For example, if a reciter reads:
And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water
[An-Nisa 4:43]
and his voice ends at the phrase:
or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself
[An-Nisa 4:43]
it is not good to go back and say:
or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women
[An-Nisa 4:43]
If he repeats it, we would say: repeat the condition as well: so that you repeat the answer to the condition along with the condition. But praise be to Allah, as long as you stopped for an excuse, start from where you stopped, and there is no need to repeat what came before it. As for the noble verse, you heard that Allah the Exalted says:
O you who have believed
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
If I asked any one of you: what is the meaning of:
O you who have believed
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
he would say: What is this? Is it a statement or a call? It is a call; our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) is calling us:
O you who have believed
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
Therefore, we must listen. What do You want, O our Lord? For this reason, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When you hear Allah saying: O you who believe, then give it your hearing—listen—either it is good that you are commanded to do, or evil that you are forbidden from. Every place in the Qur'an where it says:
O you who have believed
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
there must be good there, either you are commanded to do it or forbidden from it, or it is a beneficial story by which Allah benefits you.
