The questioner : I am a young man, twenty-seven years old, and I have been afflicted with a chronic illness for which I have found no cure. I have visited several hospitals, both domestically and abroad, and have undergone several operations, but to no avail. My illness is in my stomach. Several years have passed, and I have fasted some days of Ramadan and broken the fast for others, but the year passes and Ramadan comes again, and I have not made up the missed days due to the illness. On the days I do fast, I am exhausted, and the time does not pass without me being greatly fatigued. Since a person is exposed to death at any time, what should I do about these days and months that I have not made up? And what should I do regarding the upcoming months of Ramadan? Please advise us, may you be rewarded?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. The situation of this questioner, who stated that he is suffering from an illness in his stomach, that he is sometimes able to fast and sometimes not, and that when he is able to fast he finds it extremely difficult, is that he must feed a poor person for each day, for both the past and the future, as long as he remains in this condition. This is because the scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, stated that a man who is unable to fast and is incapacitated by a continuous inability, his obligation is to feed a poor person for each day, like an elderly person. By doing this, his conscience is cleared. So for the days that remain upon you, feed a poor person for each day. And for the future months of Ramadan, feed a poor person for each day as long as you remain in this condition. If Allah grants you health, your conscience is cleared regarding what occurred before the recovery, and then you resume fasting in the future. Yes.
