We are in Sudan, and this program, *Nur 'ala al-Darb* (Light on the Path), comes to us at the time of the Maghrib prayer and ends ten minutes after the adhan, so I delay the Maghrib prayer

The questioner : We are in Sudan, and this program, *Nur 'ala al-Darb* (Light on the Path), comes to us at the time of the Maghrib prayer and ends ten minutes after the adhan, so I delay the Maghrib prayer until the program ends. Is there any sin on me for this delay?

The Shaykh : The answer is that there is no sin on her for this delay as long as she prays the prayer before its time expires. It is well known that the time for Maghrib extends until the time for 'Isha' begins, which is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, or so, after the Maghrib prayer, meaning approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, or so, after the setting of the sun. Sometimes it may reach one hour and thirty minutes, and sometimes it may be shorter, such as one hour and fifteen minutes. The important point is that delaying the Maghrib prayer from the beginning of its time in order to listen to this program is permissible, because listening to this program and other religious programs is listening to a session of knowledge. The virtue of seeking knowledge and striving for it is not hidden from anyone, to the extent that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him من سلك طريقاً يلتمس فيه علماً سهل الله له به طريقاً إلى الجنة
Sahih Muslim 2699a
.
Seeking knowledge is among the best of acts of worship and nearness to Allah, to the extent that Imam Ahmad said: "There is nothing that outweighs knowledge for one whose intention is sound. They said: How is the intention sound, O Abu 'Abd Allah? He said: He intends to remove ignorance from himself and from others." So seeking knowledge is a type of jihad in the path of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because the religion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is established upon two things: knowledge and fighting those who oppose it and stand against it. And if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) knows from the intention of this listening woman that, were it not for her seeking to listen to this program, she would have prayed at the beginning of the time, then she will be rewarded with the reward of one who prayed at the beginning of the time, because she only delayed the prayer for a legitimate religious interest, which may be better than advancing the prayer to the beginning of its time.
