The questioner : The female listener asks and says: Regarding the authenticity of this hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked a question by the delegation from Yemen, and they said to him: We find in ourselves things that we are too ashamed to mention, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them:
That is faith ذلك هو الإيمان
If a thought comes to you that distresses you, makes you think about it, and drives it away from your mind, then that is faith. And you should continue to seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. Is this hadith authentic, and what is its meaning?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
I do not know this hadith in this exact wording, but its meaning is reported in more than one hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the whispers that Shaytan casts into the hearts of the sons of Adam. A person finds in himself a desire to fall from the sky or to be a coal, meaning a piece of charcoal, and he does not speak of it. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Did you find that? أوجدتم ذلك ؟
They said: Yes. He said:
That is the clarity of faith ذلك صريح الإيمان
meaning that is pure faith. This indicates that these whispers do not affect faith, do not scratch it, and do not diminish it, because they are whispers that Shaytan casts into the heart of a person when he knows that he is truly a believer, in order to corrupt his faith and lead him into doubts and ambiguities.
As for when the heart is sick, Shaytan does not dominate it with this kind of matter, but rather he dominates it from other aspects, such as bad behavior and bad dealings, and the like. The important thing is that when the Companions complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about what they found in their hearts of such whispers, he guided them to two things. He said:
So let him seek refuge in Allah and let him stop فليستعذ بالله ولينتهي
For the refuge of a person is his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, in Whose hand is the dominion of the heavens and the earth. So if you feel these whispers, say: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan, meaning I take hold of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, against the accursed Shaytan.
The second thing that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) guided to in this situation is that the one who has these whispers in his heart should stop, indeed he should stop, from thinking about them or leaning toward them. He should leave them and turn his attention to his affairs, to his worship, to his dealings with his family, to his dealings with those he interacts with, and forget this completely. By this, these whispers and doubts disappear, and the heart remains pure, unaffected by these stings that come from his enemy, Shaytan. Allah the Exalted said:
And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. ينزغنك من الشيطان نزغ فاستعذ بالله إنه هو السميع العليم
