Did it come in the Sunnah of the noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to recite the Qur'an for a sick person in water and then drink it, or to recite the Qur'an in oil and then anoint with it?

The questioner : You ask: Did it come in the Sunnah of the noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to recite the Qur'an for a sick person in water and then drink it, or to recite the Qur'an in oil and then anoint with it, or to recite the Qur'an in a basin written with the Verse of the Throne and then put water in it and drink the water? Because many people do this. Is this permissible, O honorable Shaykh, or not? We ask for a reward-bearing response.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers وننزل من القرأن ما هو شفاء ورحمة للمؤمنين
[Al-Isra 17:82]
This healing that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has revealed in this noble Qur'an includes the healing of hearts from their diseases and the healing of bodies from their diseases as well. Therefore, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed Abu Sa'id or others with him in the detachment that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent, and they sought hospitality from a group of Arabs but were not given hospitality, then the leader of these people was bitten by a snake. They sought a reciter from the detachment that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent.

The questioner : May Allah send prayers and peace upon him.

The Shaykh : So they came to them and said, "Is there among you a reciter, meaning a reader?" They said, "Yes, but you did not give us hospitality, so we will not recite for you except for a fee." They gave them some of the sheep. Then one of their reciters went to recite over this bitten man. He recited over him with the Opening of the Book, and he rose as if he had been released from a bond, meaning he rose quickly, well and free. Then they gave them the fee, but they hesitated until they asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When they asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, he said:
Narrated Abu Sa’id Al Khudri: Some of the Companions of Prophet (ﷺ) went on a journey. They encamped with a clan of the Arabs and sought hospitality from them, but they refused to provide them with any hospitality. The chief of the clan was stung by a scorpion or bitten by a snake. They gave him all sorts of treatment, but nothing gave him relied. One of them said: Would that you had gone to those people who encamped with you ; some of them might have something which could give you relief to your companion. (So they went and) one of them said: Our chief has been stung by a scorpion or bitten by a snake. We administered all sorts of medicine but nothing gave him relief. Has any of you anything, i.e. charm, which gives healing to our companion. One of those people said: I shall apply charm; we sought hospitality from you, but you refused to entertain us. I am not going to apply charm until you give me some wages. So they offered them a number of sheep. He then came to and recited Faithat-al-Kitab and spat until he was cured as if he were set free from a bond. Thereafter they made payment of the wages as agreed by them. They said: Apportion (the wages). The man who applied the charm said: Do not do until we come to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and consult him. So they came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) next morning and mentioned it to him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: From where did you learn that it was a charm ? You have done right. Give me a share along with you. خذوا واضربوا لي معكم بسهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 3418Sahih (Al-Albani)
And he said to the reciter:
And what makes you think, meaning what informs you that it is وما يدريك يعني ما يُعلمك أنها
meaning the Opening of the Book
a healing recitation رقية
And likewise, some of the other verses with which people seek healing, or rather which people recite over the sick, provide a proven and known benefit. So if the reciter recites over the sick person with the Opening of the Book and other appropriate verses, then there is no harm in it and no blame, and it is among the prescribed matters.
As for writing the Qur'an on papers and then putting them in water and drinking the water, or on a vessel and then putting water in it and stirring it and then drinking it, or blowing into the water with the Qur'an and then drinking it, I do not know of a Sunnah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this. However, it was the practice of the Salaf, and it is a tried matter. And thus we say there is no harm in it, meaning there is no harm in doing this for the sick so that they may benefit from it. But the one who recites in the water by blowing or spitting should not do so if he knows that there is a disease in it that is feared for this sick person for whom it was recited? Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
