The questioner : A listener, the mother of Usamah, also in her questions, this long question, says that she is a physically weak woman and gave birth to a son with great difficulty, to the point that I was screaming because they gave her, she says, a substance, she says, liquid, they say it is artificial labor, because her labor, she says, was weak. With this artificial labor, she says, I felt as if I were losing my mind, and I was very tired after the birth, and the fatigue lasted for about a year. She says that she then became pregnant with her second son, so some people advised her to go to a private hospital, and they gave her an anesthetic injection because she could not tolerate the artificial labor either. She also says, after they gave me the anesthetic injection, I did not feel the pain of labor and I slept a little. Is this permissible, O honorable Shaykh? Because I am now, she says, in my third month of pregnancy. I ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good, because some people told me that this is not permissible?
The Shaykh : If it is difficult for the woman to labor and give birth, and she takes from the permissible means what helps her with that, then there is nothing wrong with it.
The questioner : Praise be to Allah.
The Shaykh : This is from the category of enjoying the blessings of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), out of His generosity, bounty, and grace, loves for His servants to enjoy the blessings He has bestowed upon them, and He loves for His servant to see the effect of His blessing upon him. So using these painkillers or labor-strengthening agents or similar permissible things is permissible and there is no blame on her, because Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) loves ease for His servants.
The questioner : Praise be to Allah.
The Shaykh : As He the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:185] Yes.
