The questioner : The listener also asks: Is it permissible to exchange gold? For example, I take a ring from my friend and give her a ring in exchange, and each of us knows the value of the two rings.

The Shaykh : If the weight of these two rings is the same and there is no mixture in them other than gold, then there is nothing wrong with that, provided it is hand-to-hand, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Gold is to be paid for by gold, silver by silver الذهب بالذهب والفضة بالفضة
Sahih Muslim 1584e
until he said
like for like and equal for equal, payment being made hand to hand مثلا بمثل سواء بسواء يدا بيد
Sahih Muslim 1587c
However, if one of them is heavier than the other, then that is not permissible, even if the one with the lighter ring pays the difference between the lighter and the heavier one, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
or of the same quality مثلا بمثل سواء بسواء
Sahih Muslim 1584d

The questioner : Good, good.
