Is the sacrificial animal actually obligatory for me, or not?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : This is a listener to the program, Muhammad al-Sayyid, who says in his question that he works in the city of Riyadh and traveled to the city of Jeddah on Thursday evening. Then, on Friday morning, he entered ihram from Jeddah and went to Makkah, where he performed the rituals of 'Umrah. He notes that he had intended to perform 'Umrah before leaving Riyadh. He says that one of his brothers told him that he is required to slaughter an animal because he was supposed to enter ihram before leaving or on the plane, since he had intended to perform 'Umrah before departing. He asks, "So, is the sacrificial animal actually obligatory for me, or not? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good."

The Shaykh : Yes. If a person is heading to Makkah intending to perform 'Umrah or Hajj, it is obligatory for him not to pass the miqat without entering ihram, based on the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Narrated Nafi`: `Abdullah bin `Umar said: "A man got up in the mosque and said: O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) 'At which place you order us that we should assume the Ihram?' Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, 'The residents of Medina should assure the Ihram from Dhil-Hulaifa, the people of Syria from Al-Juhfa and the people of Najd from Qarn." Ibn `Umar further said, "The people consider that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had also said, 'The residents of Yemen should assume Ihram from Yalamlam.' " Ibn `Umar used to say, "I do not: remember whether Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had said the last statement or not?" يهل أهل المدينة من ذي الحليفة ويهل أهل اليمن من يلملم
Sahih al-Bukhari 133
The hadith was mentioned. This is a report that carries the meaning of a command. Therefore, what you did—leaving the miqat without entering ihram and only entering ihram from Jeddah—is not correct. According to the scholars, it is obligatory for you to slaughter a fidyah (expiatory animal) in Makkah and distribute it to the poor.
However, if you were traveling to Jeddah and did not intend to perform 'Umrah, but after arriving in Jeddah you decided to perform 'Umrah, then you enter ihram from the place where you intended to perform 'Umrah, based on the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when he designated the miqats:
and whoever is living within these boundaries can assume lhram from the place he starts, and the people of Mecca can assume Ihram from Mecca. ومن كان دون ذلك فمن حيث أنشأ حتى أهل مكة من مكة
Sahih al-Bukhari 1524
But how does one enter ihram on a plane? Entering ihram on a plane means that a person takes a ghusl (full ritual bath) at home and wears the clothes of ihram. When the plane aligns with the miqat while in the air, he recites the talbiyah and enters ihram, meaning he enters the state of pilgrimage. If he prefers not to wear the clothes of ihram until after boarding the plane, there is no harm in that. The important thing is that the plane does not align with the miqat until he is prepared and has completed his preparations, with only the intention remaining. It is known that when the pilot approaches the miqat, he alerts the passengers that the miqat is so much distance away, so that they are prepared. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
