Does sorcery have an effect to the extent that it stops a marriage project?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The listener, M.A. from Syria, sent a message saying: O honorable Shaykh, does sorcery have an effect to the extent that it stops a marriage project? And if this effect is true, is there a cure from the Book and the Sunnah without going to the fortune-tellers and sorcerers? We ask for guidance, may you be rewarded?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
The questioner : O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him.
The Shaykh : The answer to this question is that sorcery, without a doubt, has a direct effect, as evidenced by the Qur'an and reality. As for the Qur'an, Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:102] And as for reality, yes.
There is also another evidence from the Qur'an. I say, as for the Qur'an, it is in the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:102] and His saying in the story of Musa (peace be upon him): [Taha 20:66].
And as for reality, it is witnessed, for sorcery affects the one who is bewitched; it affects his mind, his body, his thought, and his direction. Sorcery is among the major sins, and indeed, a branch of it is disbelief that expels one from the religion. Therefore, it is obligatory for Muslims to stay away from sorcery and beware of it, to avoid the punishment of Allah and out of mercy for the servants of Allah.
As for its treatment for the one who is bewitched, it is by reciting the Qur'an, reading over the afflicted person with the verses of protection, such as the Verse of the Throne[Al-Ikhlas 112:1] [Al-Falaq 113:1] [An-Nas 114:1] and other verses that contain protection from the evil of creation. Or, water is brought, and seven leaves of the sidr tree are crushed and placed in this water, and it is read over or blown into with such as the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Yunus 10:81] and other verses that indicate the invalidation of sorcery. The patient afflicted with sorcery is then given this to drink. Also, the patient can be treated for sorcery with permissible medicines taken from trees or other things.
Also, sorcery is treated by untying the sorcery, by reaching the place where the sorcery is, and taking the means in which the sorcery was placed, and it is untied and burned, and the like of these types of permissible untying.
As for going to the sorcerers to untie the sorcery, if that is out of dire necessity, the scholars differed on its permissibility. Some of them permitted it and said that dire necessity makes the forbidden permissible. And without a doubt, if the sorcery of the afflicted person is untied, its harm is removed. So whatever is a means to a beneficial matter without containing harm in the religion, there is nothing wrong with it, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-An'am 6:119] Some of the Tabi'un (the generation after the Companions) held this view. And some forbade going to the sorcerers to untie the sorcery, citing that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the untying of sorcery and said: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 13:100 And because if the door is opened for people, it becomes a means to incite sorcerers and their agreement on this work, where one bewitches and the other unties the sorcery, and the gains that occur are between them, because it is known that the one afflicted with sorcery will spend a lot in order to get rid of it. And in this is a great harm.
The truth is that if we look at the specific personal dire necessity, we lean toward permissibility, meaning the permissibility of untying sorcery with sorcery out of dire necessity, as some of the Salaf (the earliest generations) and the Khalaf (the later generations) held. And if we look at the general harm, we lean toward the saying of prohibition, especially since it is supported by the hadith we mentioned, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the untying of sorcery and said:Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 13:100 The matter, in my view, is one of suspension, and knowledge is with Allah. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
