How are you? He said, “I hope in Allah, O Messenger of Allah, and I fear my sins.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “These two do not coexist in the heart of a servant in such a situation…”

The Shaykh : The second hadith is also from Anas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) came to visit a young man who was dying and said:
asked him how he was. He replied, “I am hoping in God, messenger of God, but I am afraid of my sins,” whereupon God's messenger said, “The two cannot come together in a man’s heart at such a time without God giving him what he hopes for and granting him security from what he fears.”

Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said it is a strange hadith. Ibn Majah and Ibn Abi al-Dunya also narrated it, all of them from the narration of Ja'far ibn Sulayman al-Dab'i from Thabit from Anas. The Hafiz, meaning al-Mundhiri, said its chain is good, for Ja'far is truthful and sound; Muslim relied on him, al-Nasa'i deemed him trustworthy, and al-Daraqutni and others spoke about him.
