The Shaykh : The topic of the lesson tonight is the warning against hanging talismans and amulets. Amulets (plural of *hiraz*) are anything taken to protect a thing, whether it be a human, an animal, an inanimate object, or the like. Talismans (plural of *tamimah*) are anything hung up to ward off, for example, the evil eye. These amulets and talismans are types of shirk (associating partners with Allah), among many types, by which the Muslim community has been afflicted, particularly in the later centuries. You will hear some authentic hadiths regarding the prohibition, indeed the strong warning, against them, and regarding the consideration of this as shirk.
