The Ruling on Amulets and Talismans Containing Verses of the Qur'an and Other Things

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
One of the young men here has university exams, so he went to one of the imams to have him write a paper containing a blessing?

Answer:
A talisman, you mean?
Q: Yes.
A: An amulet?
Q: Yes.
A: No, amulets are not permissible.
Q: Is it major shirk (associating partners with Allah) or minor shirk?
A: It is minor shirk. Amulets, what is called talismans, and what is called collections—these are not permissible. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hangs an amulet, Allah will not complete [his good], and whoever hangs a charm, Allah will not grant him [what he seeks]مَن تعلَّق تميمةً فلا أتمّ الله له، ومَن تعلَّق ودعةً فلا ودعَ الله له
, and
Whoever hangs an amulet has committed shirkمَن تعلَّق تميمةً فقد أشرك
.
Q: And the one who believes in this talisman?
A: He is taught and advised; he is taught through the hadiths. However, some scholars granted a dispensation for them if they contain verses from the Qur'an. The correct view is that they are not permissible absolutely, not even those from the Qur'an should be hung.
Q: Even verses from the Qur'an?
A: They are not to be hung. Rather, they are to be blown with and recited. One recites over him and blows over him, and there is no harm in that. But to put them in something and hang them around his neck or on his hand, that is not allowed.
