The questioner : The questioner says: Please inform us about women visiting graves; is it forbidden or permissible? Because there are hadiths that forbid it and hadiths that permit it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I forbade you to visit graves, but you may now visit them نهيتكم عن زيارة القبور فزوروها
Sunan Abi Dawud 3235Sahih (Al-Albani)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The woman who visits graveyards will not smell the fragrance of Paradise المرأة التي تزور المقابر لا تشم رائحة الجنة
I wish to visit my husband’s mother. Please inform us. May Allah reward you and benefit us through you?

The Shaykh : It is forbidden for a woman to visit graves; indeed, it is one of the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) cursed those who visit graves. As for the hadith the questioner cited, I do not know it to be established in its exact wording. Therefore, it is not permissible for a woman to visit graves. If she does so, she is sinful, committing a major sin among the major sins. As for his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
I used to forbid you to visit graves, but (now) visit them. كنت نهيتكم عن زيارة القبور فزوروها
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5652Sahih (Darussalam)
this is specific to men. The evidence for this specification is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Cursed are the women who visit graves لعن زائرات القبور
And we say to the woman: What do you want from visiting the grave? The answer will be that she wants to make du'a for the deceased owner of the grave. We say to her: Making du'a for the deceased is permissible at his grave and in any place. So you can make du'a for the deceased even in your house, and that suffices instead of visiting him.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
