Among the causes of the acceptance of supplication is beginning with praise of Allah and sending blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah. Is it better to do this when making supplication after the tashahhud?

The questioner : The questioner says: Among the causes of the acceptance of supplication is beginning with praise of Allah and sending blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah. Is it better to do this when making supplication after the tashahhud in the prayer, and also in prostration?

The Shaykh : The prayer is entirely praise and glorification. So from the moment a person enters into it, he says:
Glorious You are O Allah, and with Your praise, and blessed is Your Name, and exalted is Your majesty, and none has the right to be worshipped but You. سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك وتبارك اسمك وتعالى جدك ولا إله غيرك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 243Hasan (Darussalam)
Then he recites al-Fatihah or says:
Allahuma ba'id bayni wa bayna khatayaya kama ba'adta bayna al-mashriqi wal-maghrib; Allahumma naqqini min khatayaya kama yunaqqa ath-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas; Allahumma ighsilni min khatayaya bil ma'i wa ath-thalji wal-barad. (O Allah, put a great distance between me and my sins, as great as the distance You have made between the East and the West; O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed from filth; O Allah, wash away my sins with water and snow and hail). اللهم باعد بيني وبين خطاياي كما باعدت بين المشرق والمغرب اللهم نقني من خطاياي كما ينقى الثوب الأبيض من الدنس اللهم اغسلني من خطاياي بالماء والثلج والبرد
Sunan an-Nasa'i 895Sahih (Darussalam)
And supplication to Allah is praise of Him, because it is an admission by the servant of his shortcoming and an admission of the perfection, mercy, and knowledge of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. So the prayer is entirely praise. In the final tashahhud, which is the place of supplication, there is praise of Allah and sending blessings upon His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). So he begins the tashahhud with "The greetings are for Allah, the prayers and the good things," and this is praise of Allah. Then he sends peace upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), then upon himself, and upon the righteous servants of Allah. Then he sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So he does not need a specific formula for praise and glorification of Allah, or for sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Rather, when he finishes saying:
let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: From the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the Fitnah (tribulation) of Masihud-Dajjal. أعوذ بالله من عذاب جهنم ومن عذاب القبر ومن فتنة المحيا والممات ومن فتنة المسيح الدجال
Sunan Ibn Majah 909Sahih (Darussalam)
he supplicates with whatever he wishes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit the Muslims through you.
