The Shaykh : On this occasion, we mention the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what is authentic from him in the hadith that he went out one day in the midday heat, in the hot time of the day, and found Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, so he asked him, "What brought you out?" He said, "Hunger." Then, after a short time, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab met them in the midday heat, meaning at a time when it is not the nature of people in that hot land to go out. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) asked him, "What brought you out?" He said, "Hunger." He (peace be upon him) said, "And I too, nothing brought me out except hunger." So the three of them set off walking until they reached the house of a man from the Ansar known as Abu al-Tayhan. He knocked on the door, and his wife came out and greeted them. Her husband had gone out for a business deal, and soon he came and found the Messenger (peace be upon him) and his two noble companions had taken shelter with him. He rejoiced greatly at this, so he ordered his wife to prepare bread for them and slaughtered a kid or a ewe that he had. Then he roasted some of this ewe for them and brought them cold water. He picked some unripe and ripe dates for them and set out this food for them, which was the most delicious food in that land. So they ate and drank and refreshed themselves with the dates. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, and the point here is هذا من النعيم الذي ستسألون عنه يوم القيامة ولتسألن يومئذ عن النعيم This is of the blessings about which you will be asked on the Day of Resurrection, and you will surely be asked on that Day about the blessings. What is behind this question? Behind it is that the answer should be an acknowledgment that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is the One who bestowed upon this person what He bestowed, and that this person has fulfilled the obligation of thanking Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for His many blessings. But if he is ungrateful, then as He the Exalted said [Ali 'Imran 3:97] So, if we find ourselves living in a blessing by which Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) has favored us over other people, we must thank Him with a special thanks in return for this preference and this specific designation by which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has favored us with one of His many blessings. This is because there are blessings shared by all servants, and there are specific blessings by which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) favors whom He wills of His servants.
