Is a wife required to obey her husband if he forbids her from maintaining family ties?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A message was received by the program from one of the female listeners. The sender (J. A. S.) says: My sister has a number of questions, among which is one that asks: If my husband prevents me from maintaining ties with my relatives, do I have to obey him in that? And who are the relatives with whom I am obligated to maintain ties? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
If your husband prevents you from maintaining family ties, you are not obligated to obey him in this, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.إنما الطاعة في المعروف
Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani)
. Therefore, if he orders you to sever family ties, there is no obedience to him in that. There is no harm in you maintaining ties with your relatives through money and by making du'a' for their success and guidance, especially if they are poor. You may do good to them from your zakah or from your own wealth, not from his wealth. There is no harm in you giving to your relatives and maintaining ties with them from your own money, not from his. As for his money, you must have his permission. As for your own money, if you provide for your mother, your sisters, your aunts, or your maternal aunts with some money because of their poverty, there is no harm and no blame on you. If you fear harm from him, give to them secretly through a hidden method that he does not know, combining both benefits: so that you avoid his harm and so that you do good to your needy relatives through secrecy and concealment, so that he does not treat you badly, so that he does not harm you, and so that it does not lead to divorce. We ask Allah for guidance for everyone. Yes.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
