The questioner : We conclude this session, may Allah preserve you, with this questioner from the Sultanate of Oman inquiring about the noble verse in Surat al-Baqarah:
Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it
[Al-Baqarah 2:284]
?

The Shaykh : Yes. When this verse was revealed to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), it was difficult for them, and they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting on their knees, hoping for relief. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Say, “We hear and we obey.”
They said, “We hear and we obey.” So Allah relieved them and revealed His saying:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
Thus, Allah lifted the obligation from them except for what was within their capacity. For this reason, the Prophet (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
Allah, the Most High, has forgiven my followers what they contemplate on within themselves (i.e. evil thoughts) as long as they do not act upon or speak about them.
Bulugh al-Maram 8:133
Therefore, the whisperings of the self, no matter how obscene or ugly they may be, do not harm a person as long as he dislikes them and does not incline toward them, for Allah the Exalted said:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit the Muslims through you.
O dear brothers, the listeners.
