The questioner : From the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abu Khalid from Minya says: What is the ruling on one who swore by the Book of Allah that he would not disobey Allah in anything, yes, then committed this sin? What is the ruling on one who swore by the Book of Allah and then fell into this transgression? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : He must repent from the sin he committed with sincere repentance, such that he is sincere in his intention to repent, feels remorse for the disobedience he has passed, ceases from it immediately, and resolves not to return to it in the future. He should hasten to do so, for a person does not know when death may overtake him. He must also expiate the oath because he has broken this oath. And Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn
[Al-Ma'idah 5:89]
