The questioner : From northern Sinai, Egypt. The questioner Abu Muhammad says: O honorable Shaykh, we have people who slaughter for the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the righteous, and who slaughter when buying a new car so that it does not have an accident, and who slaughter for the new house so that the jinn do not dwell in it, and who slaughter for the water tank so that no one drowns in it. Please inform us of the ruling on these matters?
The Shaykh : Yes. As for slaughtering for the awliya (close friends of Allah) or others from among the created beings, it is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) that expels one from the religion. And Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:72] These people will not benefit from prayer, nor charity, nor fasting, nor Hajj (the major pilgrimage), nor any other righteous deeds, because no righteous deed is accepted from a disbeliever, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said: [At-Tawbah 9:54] And these people should repent to Allah Mighty and Majestic from that, and they should be steadfast in sincerity. And whoever repents from a sin, Allah turns to him in mercy. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said: [Al-Furqan 25:68-71] As for slaughtering when moving into a house or building a tank or the like, this is foolishness and error, but it does not reach the degree of major shirk (associating partners with Allah). They should refrain from this action, because that is not a means to preserving the house or the tank or the like. It resembles amulets and incantations that are not prescribed. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
The Shaykh : Yes. As for slaughtering for the awliya (close friends of Allah) or others from among the created beings, it is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) that expels one from the religion. And Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger and that they come not to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are unwilling.
(68) And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty. (69) Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated - (70) Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. (71) And he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allah with [accepted] repentance.
